About Our Program
The Franciscan Health Emergency Medicine Residency is a three-year ACGME accredited program started in 2021. It follows the previous historic AOA-approved MWU/CCOM program that was established in 1981 and stopped accepting new residents after 2018 with the merger of AOA and ACGME. There have been >500 residents from the program, and the historic AOA program completes its training in 2022. This was the largest osteopathic emergency medicine program in the United States, and our program aims to continue the storied tradition of training excellent residents for a lifelong career in emergency medicine.

Our mission is to train emergency medicine physicians and to provide exemplary care for patients in our emergency department. The residency program includes several hospitals with moderate to high volume urban and suburban settings in the south Chicago suburbs and northwest Indiana area. The sites will also serve as core curriculum rotations for medical students.
The goal is to train emergency physicians that are prepared to practice in modern, culturally and socioeconomically diverse environments. We strive to prepare future physicians to serve the populace with expertise, integrity and compassion, grounded in evidence-based knowledge, skill, practice, and professionalism. We seek to impact and assure the viability, quality and advancement of our healthcare system by instilling in our trainees the necessity for life-long learning as a critical component of safe and appropriate care of patients. Faculty provides one-on-one mentorship to residents and assist in the development of scholarly activity, and work to advance the field of emergency medicine.
